Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
The highlights of Georgia's capital, the best day trips to the mountains, local food and practical tips for your first visit.
Tbilisi is a green, hilly city on the Mtkvari river, with colourful balconies, warm hospitality and the Caucasus mountains a few hours away. It suits couples, families and anyone who loves nature.
In the city
- Walk the Old Town and take the cable car from Rike Park up to Narikala Fortress for the best view
- Relax in the domed sulphur baths of the Abanotubani district
- Cross the glass Bridge of Peace and stroll Rustaveli Avenue
- Ride the funicular to Mtatsminda Park for a panorama at sunset
Day trips
- Mtskheta, the old capital, with Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (UNESCO), about 30 minutes away
- Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and Gergeti Trinity Church below Mount Kazbek — a full day on the scenic Georgian Military Road
- The Kakheti wine region and the hilltop town of Sighnaghi
Food to try
Try khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), khinkali (large dumplings), and fresh churchkhela sweets made from nuts and grape juice. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable.
Practical tips
- The currency is the Georgian lari (GEL).
- From Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) the centre is about 20–30 minutes by taxi or app, or take the city bus.
- Entry rules depend on your passport — many nationalities are visa-free, others need an e-visa. Check Georgia's official sources before you book.
- Renting a car is a great way to reach the mountains, but roads can be narrow and winding.
- The best months are May to June and September to October; winter is ideal for the Gudauri ski resort.
