What to see in Kuala Lumpur, easy trips to the highlands and islands, getting from the airport and tips for families.

Malaysia is a favourite long-haul trip from the Middle East: modern cities, rainforest, cool highlands, beautiful islands and halal food everywhere. Kuala Lumpur is the natural starting point.

In Kuala Lumpur

  • The Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park — come back at night when the towers are lit
  • Batu Caves, a temple inside a limestone hill reached by 272 colourful steps
  • Bukit Bintang for shopping malls and the Jalan Alor food street
  • Merdeka Square and the historic colonial buildings
  • Putrajaya, the planned capital with its pink-domed mosque, about 40 minutes away

Beyond the capital

  • Genting Highlands — cool air, cable car and theme park, about an hour away
  • Cameron Highlands — tea plantations and strawberry farms, around three to four hours by road
  • Langkawi or Penang — a short domestic flight for beaches and island life

Arriving

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is about 50–60 km from the city. The KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in roughly 30–35 minutes; taxis and ride-hailing apps take longer in traffic. Most flights from Iraq connect through the Gulf or Istanbul.

Practical tips

  • The currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). Cards and e-wallets are widely accepted.
  • The climate is tropical: hot and humid all year, with short heavy showers, often in the afternoon.
  • Entry rules vary by nationality — confirm with Malaysia's official immigration sources before you book.
  • Ride-hailing apps are cheap and safe for getting around the city.
