Cappadocia guide: balloons, cave hotels and valleys
Updated October 12, 2026 · 5 min read
How to get to Cappadocia, where to stay, booking a hot-air balloon flight, and the best things to see in two or three days.
Cappadocia in central Turkey is famous for its fairy chimneys, cave hotels and the hundreds of hot-air balloons that rise over the valleys at sunrise. Two or three days are ideal.
How to get there
- Fly to Kayseri (ASR) — about an hour and fifteen minutes by road to Göreme — or Nevşehir (NAV), which is closer but has fewer flights.
- From Iraq, most travellers connect through Istanbul.
- Book an airport shuttle or transfer in advance; public transport from the airports is limited.
Where to stay
Göreme is the most central village, with many cave hotels and views of the balloons. Uçhisar is quieter with great views, and Ürgüp has more restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere.
Hot-air balloon tips
- Flights take off at sunrise and depend on the wind. Book for your first morning so you have a second chance if it is cancelled.
- Book with a licensed company and check what is included (hotel pick-up, flight time, insurance).
- Even if you don't fly, watching the balloons from a viewpoint is unforgettable.
What to see
- Göreme Open-Air Museum with its rock-cut churches and frescoes
- The underground cities of Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı
- Sunset in the Red and Rose valleys
- Uçhisar Castle, the highest point in the area
- Pottery workshops in Avanos
Getting around
Renting a car gives the most freedom, and roads are easy to drive. Otherwise, guided day tours (often called the Red and Green tours) cover the main sights in one day.
Best time
April to June and September to October have mild weather. Winters are cold, often with snow — beautiful, but bring warm clothes.
