Flights, airports, getting into the city, money and the best time to visit — everything you need for your first trip from Iraq to Istanbul.

Istanbul is one of the most popular trips from Iraq: it is close, there are many flights every week, and the city mixes history, shopping, food and the sea. This guide walks you through the practical side so your first trip goes smoothly.

Flights from Iraq

A direct flight from Baghdad to Istanbul takes around three to three and a half hours. There are also direct flights from Erbil, Basra, Najaf and Sulaymaniyah, depending on the season.

Airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Pegasus and AJet serve these routes, but schedules change between summer and winter. Compare prices across several dates — the difference between two days can be large.

Two airports: IST or SAW?

Istanbul has two international airports, and choosing the right one can save you time and money on the ground.

  • Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, north of the city. It is closest to Taksim, Şişli and the historic peninsula.
  • Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side. Low-cost airlines often fly here; it is convenient if you are staying in Kadıköy or Ataşehir.
  • Check which airport your flight uses before you book a hotel or a transfer — crossing the city at rush hour can take more than an hour.

Getting from the airport to the city

  • Airport buses (Havaist from IST, Havabus from SAW) are cheap and run to the main districts.
  • The metro line from Istanbul Airport connects to the city's metro network.
  • A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest choice with family or heavy luggage: the driver waits at arrivals with your name and the price is fixed in advance.
  • Buy an Istanbulkart (the city's transport card) for metro, trams, buses and ferries.

Visa and documents

Entry rules depend on your passport and can change. Before you travel, check the official Turkish e-Visa website (evisa.gov.tr) or the Turkish embassy or consulate. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and keep a digital copy of it on your phone.

Money and internet

The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY). Cards are accepted almost everywhere; exchange offices in the city usually give better rates than the airport.

For internet, a travel eSIM is the simplest option: you install it before the flight and have data the moment you land, while keeping your Iraqi number for WhatsApp.

Best time to visit

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) have pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is hot and busy, and prices rise during Eid holidays — book early if you travel then.
